This exquisite ceramic stem cup is a classic embodiment of the Yuan dynasty’s robust yet scholarly aesthetic. It is elegantly formed with a wide, flared rim and deep, rounded sides, all supported by a tall, tapering hollow foot masterfully molded in the shape of a bamboo stalk. The glaze is unctuous and thick, possessing the characteristic bluish-white tint of the period, which provides a luminous ground for the underglaze decoration.

The cobalt blue is of an intense, deeply saturated tone, exhibiting the natural “heaping and piling” effects and metallic iron-spotting typical of the imported Sumali cobalt used in the fourteenth century. The exterior is beautifully painted with the “Three Friends of Winter” (Suihan Sanyou): the pine is rendered with powerful, gnarled branches and dense needles; the bamboo stands upright with distinct nodes and fluttering leaves; and the plum blossoms are delicately captured using the “circle-and-dot” method, their stamens clearly defined. This trio is set against a backdrop of jagged, weathered garden rocks, together symbolizing resilience and integrity in the face of adversity.

The brushwork is exceptionally spirited and spontaneous, with natural variations in line thickness that showcase the artisan’s confidence. The foot rim is precisely trimmed, and the exposed body shows traces of natural “fire-red” oxidation, consistent with the high-fired porcelain production of the Yuan era. This piece is a remarkable marriage of a nomadic-influenced form and traditional Chinese literati symbolism.
