This blue and white covered jar is a rare masterpiece from the Yuan dynasty, decorated with vivid narrative scenes from the classic drama “Romance of the Western Chamber” (Xixiang Ji). The vessel is robustly potted with a dignified silhouette, dense body, and smooth contours, covered overall in a lustrous white glaze of soft jade-like sheen.

Painted in rich Sumali Qing cobalt blue, the decoration exhibits deep sapphire tones with natural iron specks and soft diffusion characteristic of early imported cobalt. The domed cover depicts Zhang Sheng and Cui Yingying meeting under the moon, surrounded by scrolling lotus motifs. Around the body, four framed scenes unfold in sequence—“The Serendipitous Encounter at the Buddha Hall,” “Poetic Exchange by the Wall,” “The Letter of Gratitude,” and “Farewell at the Pavilion”. Each is rendered with delicate brushwork, graceful composition, and fluid transitions between settings, perfectly balancing storytelling and ornamentation.

The unglazed footrim shows typical firing scars and reddish kiln traces, the fine greyish-white porcelain body compact and pure, revealing classic Jingdezhen Yuan kiln workmanship.

Combining literary narrative, artistic finesse, and technical excellence, this Blue and White “Romance of the Western Chamber” Covered Jar stands as a distinguished exemplar of Yuan blue-and-white porcelain—an achievement uniting Chinese literature and ceramic art in perfect harmony.
